What It Is

MetaMask is a software wallet available as a browser extension and mobile application. It connects users to Ethereum and other compatible blockchain networks and decentralized applications. Traditional MetaMask accounts are self-custodial: the user controls the Secret Recovery Phrase and keys. Newer social-login and smart-account options may use different recovery and technical arrangements that must be reviewed separately.

Key Features

  • Browser and mobile access for transfers, token management, network switching, and dApp connections.
  • Manual and built-in support for Ethereum and many EVM-compatible networks.
  • Integrated swaps, buying, bridging, staking, and portfolio features may use third-party providers or smart contracts.
  • Hardware wallets can be connected for certain workflows, adding device-based signing.

Fees and Costs

The wallet application is generally free to install. Blockchain network fees apply, while swaps, bridges, purchases, staking, and third-party integrations may add service fees or spreads. The transaction screen and provider terms should be reviewed before approval.

Custody and Security

In the traditional setup, the Secret Recovery Phrase controls the wallet and cannot be recovered by MetaMask support. As a hot wallet, MetaMask operates on an internet-connected device and is exposed to phishing, malware, malicious extensions, deceptive tokens, smart-contract approvals, and transaction-signing risks. A local password protects the app on that device but does not replace the recovery phrase.

Availability and Eligibility

MetaMask states that the self-hosted wallet can be used worldwide, but default infrastructure, purchase providers, swaps, staking, and other services can be restricted by location. Network and token support also varies by feature.

Potential Advantages

  • Widely used interface for Ethereum and EVM-compatible dApps.
  • No hardware purchase required for basic use.
  • Can connect to hardware wallets and custom networks.

Limitations and Risks

  • Hot-wallet exposure and high phishing/scam risk.
  • Self-custody mistakes can be irreversible.
  • Users must understand networks, gas, token contracts, approvals, and dApp permissions.
  • Integrated services and social-login options add distinct provider, privacy, recovery, and smart-contract risks.

Who May Find It Useful

May suit users who actively use Ethereum-compatible applications and understand self-custody. It is not ideal for people who cannot securely protect recovery access or who want primarily offline, long-term storage.

Educational Position

Fichtner Digital does not rate this provider or ecosystem and does not consider inclusion an endorsement. Suitability depends on the user's location, knowledge, objectives, and ability to understand the applicable custody and technical risks.

Maintenance note: Recheck material facts before publication and at least every six months, or sooner after a major product, legal, fee, security, network, or availability change.
